Depresstion Essay Every person in the world today endures some kind of a hardship. Every misfortune is different; one persons could take the form of divorce while anothers takes the form of a fatal illness. In either case, their trauma could lead to depression, which in the long run can be more problematic. Depression is one of the most prevalent problems in our modern society today. To understand fully how and why depression affects people, a little background is needed. Depression is best defined as a psychiatric disorder in which a persons emotional state is marked by sadness, inactivity and self-depreciation.Depending on the source, depression is not defined as an illness, however, most sources agrees that prolonged cases of depression can become a mental illness that affects everything one does. Oddly enough most people do suffer from depression and develop a mental illness from it, have a physical illness to keep it company. Not everyone who is depressed seeks help or treatment, therefor, it isn t wholly possible to judge how widespread the condition is. Researchers believe that in the United States today, approximately 15 million people are severely depressed, while one in six people suffer from mild depression (1981, Berger, G.). These numbers merely represents the people who are brave enough to step forward and seek help. This shows, while depression is one most prevalent and one of the most expensive mental illnesses, costing the government in excess of $27 billion dollars a year in lost work time, it is also the most treatable of all mental illnesses. 80 percent of 15 million people seek professional help such as drug treatment, psychotherapy, and electroshock therapy, improve with in a few months to a year (1992, worsnap, R. L.). While hope exists for the people who suffer from severe depression, ultimately they must take the first step and seek help. The largest group afflicted with depression is that of young adults. The teenage years are very stressful as individuals strive to carve themselves a niche that will help distinguish who they are as they try to achieve their life goals. Conforming to society molds takes a toll on todays youth. If teens cant show their emotions such as, grief, guilt, panic and anger it leads to depression. Everyone wants to fit in with the popular clique and unless they do, they feel somehow different. At an early age this difference can lead to depression as each child begins to think that he/she are too fat, not athletic enough, or just not intelligent. A test conducted with children having known cases of depression revealed that generally before the age of 10, boys are just as likely to be depressed as girls. As they reach their teenage years, the number of depressed girls begin to surge ahead of boys. Even though depression is high in young adults, only 14 percent of depressed children have episod es before the age of 15. This means that female young adults are three to four times more likely to become depressed in the everyday grind of life. Which is not surprising with all of the beauty magazines that float around our supermarkets and newsstands today. The teenage girl sees an image of a super model becomes disappointed in her own image as compared to the models. The truth of the matter is, she isnt overweight and she most likely is an average to thin girl who lets one picture in a magazine make her think otherwise. She may act sluggish or slowly draw herself away from friends and family. Alteration in daily diet is another telltale sign of teenage depression. Out of every 100,000 young adults 2,000 to 3,000 will test positive for severe depression. Of that number, 10 will commit suicide every year. More then 1 million, teenagers run away from home each year. They see this as an escape and hope that by finding a new home, they will leave the depression behind them. Unknowin gly, they may send their parents or loved ones into a state of depression, while gaining nothing for themselves, often going from mediocre conditions to worse. Teenage depression can also be contributed to the parents. A study by Myrna M. Weissman at Columbia University concludes that a considerable portion of teenage depression stems from depressed adults that interact with teenagers. Not only did she find depression but also psychiatric problems. (1996, Brown, A.) When a parent is often depressed this may become a learned behavior for the young adult. One problem that affects depression in males and females is consumption of alcohol over 1.3 million teenage turns to drinking as a solution for their depression. Many teens which turn to drinking feel helpless and hopeless. (1995, Kasschau, R. A.). While they are not only too young to accept the consequences that may pertain to their drinking, approximately 90 percent of the young adults who try to drink to eliminate their problems, including depression, become hooked for life. Drinking to get rid of depression, in no way will help, because acheohle is a depressant, which will cause their depression to become even greater. Depression in adults is almost as widespread as depression in young adults. Similar to the earlier scenario, women are far more likely to be depressed than men. A time in which women may be depressed is during pregnancy. Depression can occur before and after the birth of a baby, wide ranges of emotions are possible. Often there are the expected feelings of excitement and joy, along with feelings of anxiety and worry. Mothers may also feel overwhelmed, uncertain, and frustrated. Caring for an infant is difficult work. During pregnancy there may include some unexpected highs and lows. At least one in ten new mothers experiences some form of postpartum depression. Postpartum often occurs within days of the delivery or appears gradually, sometimes up to a year or so later. Symptoms of this include: sluggishness, fatigue, exhaustion, sadness, hopelessness, appetite and sleep disturbances. Other examples are: over concern for the baby, uncontrollable crying, lack of interest in the baby, g uilt, fear of harming the baby and lack of interest in sex. Women tend to also be depressed about their marriages, which at times, creates a feeling of unneeded emotional work. One study shows that women who do all or most of the housework are more likely to become depressed over the years. One source shows that some people feel depressed because of educational status. One-woman dropped out of college, and by doing this, she severely limited her options in the job market. Currently, working as a teachers aide, with this job room for promotion is not available, and her only other possibilities with a high school degree are dwindling as the job market becomes increasingly more competitive. The results of adult depression can be almost as costly as those of their teenage counterparts. While they are less prone to committing suicide, however, they have considerably more tools at their disposal to send their lives spinning.Their age allows them to purchase alcohol without sneaking around to find someone willing to buy it for them, as teenagers must do. With this as an option, adults drink until they forget about their troubles with depression and have only the drink to turn to. This maybe ok for the person until it slowly drags the rest of their family into their problems. Another way in which adults deal with depression is overwork. To help forget about their depression they spend long days at the office or take on two or more jobs to occupy their time. The last major form of dealing with depression is gambling. With a steady income, adults find that the flashing lights and ringing bells combined with the prospect of winning money draw countless depressed adults to casinos around the nation.Depression is a reality in the elderly. 65% of the elderly have some form of depression, and accounting for 25% of all suicides. (1996, Brown, A.) Elderly males have the highest rate of all age groups. Many aspects of an older persons life may be found to be depressing. Elderly dont always show their depression in the same was as adolescents or even adults. Some symptoms for depression in old age are fatigue, loss of appetite, weight loss, or gain, memory loss and thoughts of suicide. Sleeping difficulties are often thought to have a connection with depression, when in actuality troubles sleeping is associated with the aging process or a medical condition rather than with depression. Contributing factors include the loss of a spouse or close friends, chronic pain and illness, difficulty with mobility, frustration with memory loss, difficulty adapting to changing circumstances such as moving from a home to a retirement facility, or changes within the family. Depression can also be a sign of a medical problem. When there is a loss of a spouse, researchers found that the living partner is most likely to feeling guilty for a number of reasons. It is common to feel guilty simply for being alive when someone else has died. Because relationships are never perfec t, you were bound to have had some disagreements with your spouse or close friend. Feeling guilty for those arguments, or believe you should have been a better husband, wife or friend is normal in this stage. Guilt can easily change to a form of depression. When guilt from loosing a spouse turns into depression many times the depression that will be overcome when the guilt has disappeared or lessened. After the loss of a friend or spouse, the living person may become preoccupied with the person who died, and may think about the loved one constantly, re-create the circumstances of the death over and over in his/her mind, also having dreams or nightmares about the person. This can be a form of depression and is more likely to turn into a mental illness than to be easily over come. During the time of grieving for a lost loved one, it is not only a time of guilt, but also of stress. According to T. H. Holmes and R. H. Rahes Social Readjustment Rating Scale, death of a spouse causes more stress in a persons life than any other event. (Psych book) Depression goes hand in hand with stress. 95 percent of those polled believe that stress is a major part of depression (my survey). During this time of loss, experts say, If youre not depressed at this time it is thought that you then have issues with the deceased person or with death itself that need to be worked out. The aging process impacts the neurological function of older adults. Other illnesses prevalent in the elderly may also impact the brains balance of chemicals that control mood. Parkinsons, stroke, Alzheimers, thyroid dysfunction and brain tumors are some examples. When having one of these impairments depression is often inevitable. These factors may point out to the elderly that death is coming. When approaching death a person reacts in stages. The first is denial and isolation; the dying person will deny the whole thing and isolate themselves from the people who are telling them they are dying. Anger is the next stage. They will be mad at the world and the person or thing they thought did this to them. Third is bargaining. Often the dying person will bargain with God, saying, I will do anything if you let me live. The Forth and the longest lasting stage is depression. As death draws near the person recognizes that death can not be prevented, feelings of futility, exhaustion and deep depression may set in. This person realizes that he or she will be separated from friends, loved ones, and familiar routines of life, and this causes profound sadness. Upon setting her sights upon Romeo she instantly became love lost, and began to see the world through rose tinted glasses. Just as the modern world has horoscopes, fortune-tellers and palm readers and so forth, the people of the sixteen-century also looked towards the stars and the heavens above for guidance and advice. Having noted this, I would imply that in Act 1 Scene 3 lines 70 100, the ideals of marriage and love had been thrust into Juliets head. Therefore she goes to the feast with the knowledge that Paris will be looking to her for a show of affection and a Move in the right direction, so to speak. In addition to this, could Juliet be looking to find another suitor in order to make Paris jealous? In doing so could she have unintentionally lured Romeo into an uncomfortable emotional trap? During Act 3 scene 5, the emotional thoughts and feelings developed by Romeo and Juliet, are displayed and emphasised by Shakespeares use of stage direction and imagery. For example, lines 1 59 Nights candles are burnt out, and jocund day stands tiptoe on the misty mountain tops. This language highlights the maturity of Romeo who is the antithesis of Juliet. We are already aware that, she is younger than Romeo, however so far in the play we have seen quite a different character, I mean this in terms of actions and the choice of attitudes, which Shakespeare has cleverly included for us. Also, the reference to the light of day showing the safety and lack of awareness to the adjacent dark night, which illustrates the scarce amount of security and protection in and around the dark streets and alleys of Verona. Some people may not be open to the idea that the streets of a fairy tale can at all be compared to that of the modern day, however this highlights once again the public perception of the works of Shakespeare. Shakespeare intended to bring to his audience a sense of fantasy and fiction yet at the same time make them aware that the differences between the streets of London and Verona were not at all too dissimilar. After the young lovers night of passion where they finally gave in to their longing for one another, Juliet wishes for Romeo to stay a little while longer, despite the dangers due to his banishment, and this leads to Romeos teasing of Juliet and her naivety. In my opinion, Juliet is very impressionable at this stage in the play because I feel that she hangs on every statement made by the argued love of her life, this also shows that there is an age gap between the couple and that Romeo has a higher degree of maturity to Juliet. However no matter how serious the mood, the excitement of getting caught must have appealed to both of their desiring personalities; as in lines 37 63, Nurse: Your lady mother is coming to your chamber. The day is broke, be wary, look about. Juliet: Then window let day in, and let life out. Romeo: Farewell, farewell! One kiss, and Ill descend. This metaphor tells us that Juliet already at this early stage has an intuition, that it will be the last time that she will see Romeo in his true, original form. After so long apart they will both be different people with different lives. Romeo also talks lightly of death through the words farewell! and descend. When people die you give them their last farewell, and they descend (go down) into the earth and this is the last glimpse of your loved ones. Juliet: O god, I have and ill divining soul! Methinks I see thee now, thou art so low, As one dead in the bottom of a tomb. Either my eyesight fails, or thou lookst pale. Romeo: And trust me, love, ion my eye so do you: Dry sorrow drinks our blood. In a similar way the speech made by Lady Capulet gives Juliet time to move between the balcony and the apron of the main stage. The employment of time and space creates an atmosphere full of emotion and irony, which is much appreciated by the audience. Lady Capulet is a loyal wife who respects her marriage and follows out orders given from her over ruling husband. Juliet on the other hand is a new generation of females who wanted independence and therefore is not afraid to stand up to her father. In a way I believe that Lady Capulet envies this in the fresh new blood of her daughter and this enables the audience yet again to see the distance spread between the characters. Also the atmosphere created by the two characters when, very rarely, they are on stage together, might be possible to describe as to much of a much-ness. Simply meaning, that they are more simila r to each other than they would like to admit. However this just makes Juliet older headed and more strong willed towards what she wants, but is what she ultimately gets going to be what she desires? This is another key point where Shakespeares techniques capture the audiences imagination, thoughts and feelings. The audience are also given the opportunity to put themselves in the place of Romeo and Juliet to reveal how they would cope in the situation. With the Nurse, being the closest character to Juliet, she is the first person that the troubled teenager turns to for comfort once all her family have deserted her. It later becomes apparent during lines 204 242 that Nurse, by caring for Juliet could actually be looking after herself Nurse: I think it best you married with the county O, hes a lovely gentleman! Romeos a dishclout to him. The Nurse shows her selfishness through her ability to sweet-talk Juliet into forgetting Romeo and her marriage to him, and to marry Paris. In spite of their close relationship, a gap is soon apparent, through Nurses inability to see through Juliets faà ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½ade, she falls for Juliets tales and actually believes that she will go through with the arranged marriage to Paris. Nurse contributes to Juliets confusion by changing her opinions to suit her own needs, or as she would have them hidden behind, Juliets needs. However the Nurses selfishness can be understood, by looking into the consequences that she would suffer from, if her employers were made aware of her part in this whole situation surrounding Juliets love interests. I agree that Act 3 scene 5 is the most dramatic scene in the play, and that Shakespeares utilisation of language and dramatic devices to highlight the dilemma facing the youngest Capulet holds great significance in preparing the audience for the death of Romeo and Juliet. At the end of this scene, Juliet turns to Friar Lawrence for reassurance and for a solution to her problems, seeing as her close circle of friends has forsaken her. Through the contribution of Shakespeares implied stage directions and use of imagery, the emotions and thoughts felt by Juliet are widely appreciated and developed, by audiences all over the world. During this scene, the young lover is deep in sorrow and turmoil. She accentuates the use of imagery, to show that she is vastly bewildered and in a predicament, which only she can get herself out of. Shakespeare shows how lost and alone she is and almost provides a monologue to the audience explaining her feelings of rejection and betrayal by Nurse and by her parents. Having looked at all the suggestions of blame and studying all the evidence within the scene. I believe that the real person responsible for the death of Romeo and Juliet is Tybalt. I think this because, if he had not been the one seeking a fight and wishing death upon Romeo Montague, Mercutio would not have been slain. It is also worth noting here the point that when Mercutio was slain, he wished a plague on both your houses. Evidently Romeo would not have been seeking vengeance, and to draw blood from Tybalt therefore Romeo would not have been banished. Lord Capulet would not have seen reason to renegotiate with Paris as to his wedding to Juliet and would have let two more Summers pass before beginning discussions and possibly by that time Romeo and Juliets relationship may have been out in the open. Also nurse and Friar Lawrence would not have as bigger weight hanging above their heads. Discuss this observation on the novel’ Perhaps the greatest strength of Hardy’s novels is the excellent portrayals of his main characters. There are, however, many other strengths in ‘Far From the Madding Crowd’. For example, there are many descriptions of scenery that punctuate the action in the novel. These show Hardy’s skill as a writer by painting the scene so clearly in the reader’s mind that the characters can really flourish against their backdrop. The themes of love, persistence and nature permeate the novel and give it depth, even when the plot slows down. The greatest strength, then, is likely to fall to the characters who drive both the plot and the action. Two of these characters, Oak and Troy, fall in love with Bathsheba Everdene and soon find themselves competing for her hand in marriage. The portrayal of the differences between the characters is clearly an example of Hardy’s strongest work in the novel. Gabriel Oak is a simple man who is very clear on who he is. Whilst Oak is shy, he is also honest and always tells the truth. Oak is described by Bathsheba as ‘honest and true’ and he often tells her how he feels, ‘I love you far more than common’. He doesn’t have the words and the education to express himself properly to Bathsheba, but he is steadfast, keeping to his bottom line, making Bathsheba happy. Oak is unlucky in love and in life. He fails time and time again to get Bathsheba to marry him, and when he loses his livelihood she is his first, unselfish thought: ‘â€Å"thank God I’m not married: what would she have done in the poverty now coming upon me! †Ã¢â‚¬â„¢ This shows that Oak puts other people first and is optimistic. He does not focus on the loss of his money and his farm, but on the good fortune that Bathsheba had not married him. It takes a strong personality to think in this way. Oak is described as a â€Å"young man of sound judgment†¦and general good character† very early on in the novel. He makes his intentions clear with regard to marrying Bathsheba within a few days of meeting her, and proposes a simple life to her, which reflects his own simplicity and honesty. He says: And at home by the fire, whenever you look up there I shall be— and whenever I look up, there will be you†, asking her in simple terms to accept him and love him always for who he is. Oak is very modest: ‘I was never very clever on my inside’ but he shines underneath his dull extremities, taking charge in the fire and saving Bathsheba’s farm, and again in the storm. The author Jane Bailey says that: â€Å"Gabriel is the only character to really master the forces of nature†. I agree with her in this statement because the other characters don’t deal with the problems nature gives them as well as Gabriel. In the storm, Gabriel knows the rain is coming because of the formation of the sheep, he manages to cover the bales of hay alone, and he is able to save the farm. Boldwood doesn’t get his hay covered and he loses his harvest; Troy gets drunk in the warmth of the barn. This shows that Gabriel has control over Hardy’s main theme, nature. He is a natural leader, but he prefers to sink into the world of the rustics where he feels he fits in. Oak is a kind man, taking pity on a stranger in the night and giving her a shilling, which would have been a significant sum of money. The stranger turns out to be Fanny, and he helps her a second time in death, rubbing out ‘and child’ on her coffin, although it can be debated as to whether Oak did this out of kindness to Fanny or to Bathsheba. Oak is very self-sacrificial, giving everything to Bathsheba, and telling her: â€Å"I love you and I shall love you always†. He does not change much over the course of the novel, showing how good Hardy believed him to be in the first place. Oak is not, however, a puritan. He drinks with the rustics and criticises Troy and Boldwood, who are both his class superiors. Oak is determined and Hardy rewards him in the end with a happy marriage to Bathsheba, proving, in Hardy’s mind, that perseverance pays off. Even in Oak’s steadfast protection of Bathsheba, he is never faulted. He leaves quietly when she dismisses him and comes back to save her when she needs him. Even his first name, Gabriel, signifies his long-standing protection over Bathsheba- Gabriel is an Archangel, a protector of humans so his name is very apt. From Oak’s actions and from Hardy’s descriptions of him, we can tell that Oak is a kind hearted, ideal man who loves Bathsheba more than Troy or even Boldwood could imagine.

This isnt the only .NET logging framework; there are many. However, the Apache name is trusted and the original Java logging framework has been around for more than  15 years. Why Use a Log4net Logging Framework? When an application or server crashes, you are left wondering why. Was it a hardware failure, malware, maybe a Denial of Service attack, or some odd combination of keys that manages to bypass all your code checks? You just dont know. You need to find out why a crash occurred so it can be corrected. With logging enabled, you might be able to see  why it happened. Getting Started Download the log4net  file from the Apache log4net website. Verify the integrity of the downloaded files using the PGP signature or MD5 checksums. The subjects of the observation were a male in his late twenties that appeared to be of Afro-Caribbean origin and a female of a similar age with an Eastern European accent. The male was wearing a tracksuit and had a set of headphones hanging over his shoulders. The girl was dressed in smart-casual clothes. They were sitting next to each other and were having a conversation. At the time of the observation there were not empty seats on the bus. I carried out the observation from a relatively close distance, a couple of seats away from the observed individuals. Due to the nature of what was being said, I learned that they did not seem to know each other. The observed male appeared to be confident and talkative. He seemed to lead the conversation by asking her a number of questions related to her background, marital status etc. He asked her: ‘where are you from?’, ‘How long have you been in London?’, ‘have you got a boyfriend?’ amongst other questions. Due to the nature of what was being said, I learned that they did not seem to know each other. The observed male appeared to be confident and talkative. He seemed to lead the conversation by asking her a number of questions related to her background, marital status etc. He asked her: ‘where are you from?’, ‘How long have you been in London?’, ‘have you got a boyfriend?’ amongst other questions. The observed girl gave the opposite impression. The tone of her voice and her body language showed signs that lead me to believe that she was not entirely comfortable with the situation even though she did made eye contact with him and smiled on a couple of occasions. Going to war with Mexico was Justified Essay

Can’t decide if the United States going to war with Mexico was justified or not justified? It can be a struggle to decide. Mexico won its independence from Spain in the nineteenth century. Spain controlled most of Central America. Due to the extremely low population for such territorial extension, Mexico relaxed its immigration policies, as a result, allowing American settlers to help populate the northern territories. Their conditions to settle were self-explanatory. Now what do think? The United States was justified in going to war with Mexico. The United States was justified in going to war with Mexico because, of the Manifest Destiny, Mexico robbed the United States citizens, and the U.S. wanted to extend slavery and land. One reason the Mexican war was justified was because of the Manifest Destiny. (Doc A) When we’re welcoming Mexicans into the Texas territory, they’re keeping the U.S. from expanding. America needs land because of our massive population. Mex ico’s government is so deprived that they can’t keep California. If Mexico can’t afford California, how will they even afford Texas? America will eventually have California, but that’s not enough for our evolution population. This evidence shows the U.S. was justified in going to war because Mexico can’t control the land they already have; America has more population than Mexico, the U.S. should have more land. A second reason the Mexican War was justified was an invasion that Mexico has passed the boundary of the U.S. (Doc B) James Polk, an American Political wrote to the Senate and House of Representatives that was a war message from the President. James informed the Senate & House of Representatives to order an efficient military to take position on the Rio Grande to meet a threatened invasion of Texas by the Mexican forces. Mexican troops were preparing to cross the river. This evidence shows the U.S. was justified in going to war with Mexico because Mexico had killed and injured sixteen Americans, also, Mexico had passed the boundary of the United States , invaded our their territory, and shed American blood upon the American soil. A third reason the Mexican War was justified was an invasion robbery. (Doc D) Charles Sumner, an American political and young state legislator from Massachusetts who later served twenty-four years in the U.S. While citizens from the U.S. moved into Texas to prove that it needs to be a part of the U.S., Mexico robbed them. Mexico and the U.S. both wanted Texas, but instead, the U.S. moved without letting Mexico know; therefore they robbed  the citizens of the United States. This evidence shows the U.S. was justified in going to war with Mexico because they did something so immature, only the Mexicans would do it. The United States in going to war with Mexico was justified. Many of those have died trying to receive the land of Texas. (Doc A) America should have more land because of our growing population, meanwhile, Mexico doesn’t even half nearly as the occupants that the U.S. has. It’s significant that the U.S. was justified or not in going to war with Mexico because one of them will have Texas. It’s important today because Texas enlarged one-third of the United States nation.
